3 Ways to Prep Your Lawn + Garden for Spring
Thankfully, it is time to say goodbye to “Old Man Winter” and say hello to spring! Spring cleaning involves more than just getting the inside of your house in order.
You also have a lot of spring cleaning to tend to when it comes to your lawn and garden. Here are the two top tips to spruce up your lawn and garden to get it ready for spring.
1. Avoid Fertilizer
Spring is the time for many things, but it is not (I repeat) not the time to fertilize in Northern Virginia. You see, most lawns in this area are tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass and perennial ryegrass–all cool-season grasses. In the long run, if you fertilize your lawn in the spring, it can ruin your grass and the runoff from fertilizers can be harmful to the creeks and streams in the area, and the Chesapeake Bay.
If you decide to use fertilizers or weed killers, use organic and natural fertilizers that won’t be harmful to the environment.
Add premium mulch to your garden beds. Mulching has numerous benefits to your lawn and gardens, including acting as insulation to the soil–keeping it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
When you mulch:
- Install anywhere from 2-4 inches of mulch
- Avoid piling mulch around trees or plant stems (It can stress the trees and plants.)
- Water and weed your garden beds prior to adding mulch
3. Seed (Again)
Sometime between September and October (in the fall) you should have seeded your law. It’s time to seed it again.
